Issues

Main issues

Here is where I stand on the main issues facing our district today.

  • Book Reconsideration

I support teachers, educators and librarians to select appropriate materials for their classrooms, curriculums and collections.

I support informing parents of curricular selections and providing alternative learning opportunities to students/families that opt out.

I believe that students should have a voice on the district reconsideration committee.

I believe that the school board should uphold the recommendations made by the reconsideration committee.

  • Director Districts versus At-large board members

Growing up I recall when the Central Dallas School District was dissolved and Minburn became a part of Adel- DeSoto. While I received wonderful educational opportunities while attending ADM, I wasn’t represented in athletics, the classroom, or on the school board. The kids from Minburn were treated as outsiders.

I support District Representatives because it increases the probability that Dallas Center has a representative at the school board table. The third map option selected by the DCG school board has Dallas Center grouped with rural and western sections of Grimes. Re-districting is required by law to be done every 10 years. The state requires the district population be split by 10 percent so each area is represented equally. Continuing a District map ensures that Dallas Center residents have the greatest probability of representation on the school board. Moving to all at-large positions makes it more challenging for Dallas Center residents to become elected. Both Dallas Center and Grimes residents benefit from the advantage of neighborhood representatives when bringing issues to the school board.

As an example, the school board is very similar to a small scale version of Congress. The director of each District is similar to a Congressional Representative. The at-large members are similar to Senators. Both roles are critical, my District Representative is more readily available to me because they are from my neighborhood. While at-large board members are elected to represent the entire stakeholder community. This is why I will be voting to retain District Representatives on April 11th.
