On April 11, 2023 I was honored to win the special election for At-Large Director of the DCG School Board. I supported the ballot measure for director district representation feeling it was important when considering the history of our two communities. Director districts were retained, ensuring a more equitable representation on the school board.

Much has happened since being sworn in. Three weeks after being elected, I lost my mother, a seven time stroke survivor, to a catastrophic hemorrhagic stroke. She passed on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023. As personal challenges grew, the board selected a School Resource Officer, an Associate Superintendent of School Improvement and a new Interim Director of Student Services.

Shaylee is organized, articulate and passionate about our DCG schools

My board director role is an honor for which I am humbled to serve. My plan has always been to run again this November. Days after submitting my candidacy petitions for At-Large, I was approached by a potential board candidate, Shaylee Vander Velden for DCG School Board. I know Shaylee through my involvement on the DCG Elementary Schools PTO Executive Board. Shaylee was the silent auction chair for “Reading Rocks.” Not only did Shaylee help our DCG Elementary Schools PTO raise nearly $50,000, she was a huge supporter of adding a sensory friendly time to the event. Shaylee has been a part of my family’s journey in DCG since the beginning. Shaylee is organized, articulate and passionate about our DCG schools.

I campaigned to retain director districts in the special election. Knowing the District 3 seat would be on the ballot, I looked into my options. Transparency and clear communication is important to me. Over the last week, I submitted paperwork as an At-Large candidate. After speaking with Shaylee I did some research and learned that I could rescind my At-Large petitions. Upon doing so, I would need to collect ALL new signatures and re-file as a District 3 candidate.

I am asking for your support and vote as a District 3 school board director

After a lot of reflection, and with the support of my family, on Wednesday I filed as a District 3 candidate. It wasn’t what I expected, yet here we are. I ask that all of you who have been so supportive of me consider voting for Shaylee Vander Velden for DCG School Board as an At-Large Director. Additionally, I am asking for your support and vote as a District 3 school board director. Clear communication along with teacher and student representation on the school board matters.
