The poster was under the impression that issue of Director Districts is connected to school boundaries and would impact the school that their child would attend in the future. I want to respond to this concern here.

First of all, the recent information sent out regarding the upcoming special election on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 is super confusing.

The DCG CSD School Board Director Districts DO NOT determine which elementary school your child will attend.

Secondly, the Dallas Center - Grimes CSD School Board Director Districts DO NOT determine which elementary school your child will attend. This is determined by your address and time of enrollment.

Third, Director Districts do attempt to distribute power across the community more equitably by having a representative from each area of our community consolidated school district. These "Districts" are generally centralized around our elementary schools.

Fourth, in order to comply with state law each Director District has to be within 10% population of the others. Redistricting is done every ten years with the Census. It costs the school district approximately $3000. This is a nominal amount in comparison to the overall school district budget.

Fifth, for the size of our community we are only allowed to have four Director Districts.

Finally, every Dallas Center - Grimes CSD resident will be presented with two ballot questions to consider.

  • Should we move from 4 Director Districts and 3 At-Large to all 7 At-Large?
  • Should Nancy Baker Curtis or Matthew Moran fill Marco Bejarno's vacancy on the board until November?

Residents that live in District 1 will have a third question.

  • Should Nick Fiala or Kendra Wolf fill Mark Wills school board vacancy until November, 2025?

I'd love to hear your questions

Again, this is super confusing stuff. It is also super important to understand. If you find all this confusing, I'd love to hear your questions. Additionally, I'd like to share my views on why removing Director Districts is an equity issue and explain why removing them is less representative of our entire community.

Questions are good, I'm listening. They help me know the concerns of stakeholders and how to represent their concerns as a School Board Member. I'd be honored to receive your vote in the upcoming special election.
